Bachelor of (f)Arts

Also, I recently graduated from the University of Guelph with an English degree. Psyched.

Lee Tiffany You're So Boss

I love the new John Milner You're So Boss shirts. I really do. Homeboy Lee Tiff (pictured above, middle) sketched this gruesome and intricate image for Ron's (left) band complete with pin-stripping and a bloody, abstract Milner branding (and just a little tit). But you know who really doesn't like the new Milner shirt? Old ladies at the grocery store who give you dirty looks if they catch a head on glimpse of the graphic.

I'm out, I'm Swayze.

What's 970km north of Vancouver on the Cariboo Hwy, has a population of 5,542 and is home to the World's Largest Tree Crusher? If you guessed Mackenzie, BC then you're probably a treeplanter or have an extraordinary talent for remembering statistics. It's also the city where we will be building our next skatepark. I'd like to update the blog a little more on this job but apparently we won't have the internet in our apartment so this may not be possible.
I'm excited to be in a northern community again and maybe do some camping and learn how to fly fish. Here are a couple photos from Google of the local economy and it's people. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Don Laird Collection for the use of his/her photos in this blog post. I fly out tomorrow, I just hope to God they have a decent pizza spot.

Dufferin Grove Rainy Day Edit

Home again, if only for a little while. Recently returned to Toronto and got rained out for most of my visit. I made a short edit of a couple tricks caught on camera when the rain held off. I've really got to learn how to session and film at the same time. I missed all sorts of tricks and a dirty session on the No Frills underground parking lot manual pad. You know, the downhill one that's really fast. This setup at D. Grove might look pretty shanty but our gang has had many an epic session on this patch of crete. Many a Rad Tuesday has gone down here. Slow mo RonRon is my favourite part. Click the picture, duh.

I know, I'm bummed about it too...

Due to unforeseen circumstances the print version of Dick Jokes Zine will be interrupted in the next couple of months (maybe 6). And I know your thinking, but hey you only put out one issue so pfffffff, whatever I'll just wait for the next issue of Thrasher or Club to come out. And to that I say, issue 2 is gonna be dope but its just gonna be a while. I think it will probably be pretty heavy on the building skateparks side of things  and lots of beer and hijinx, we'll see how the summer pans out. But hey, I'm still gonna try to update this thing semi-regularly, I mean its summer, internet usage always goes down in the summer.
Hope your well, see you soon.

Dick Jokes gone digital. shhhhit.

Just got a little digi cam for my birthday. Yaaa that's right, Dick Jokes has gone digital. Anyway, here's a cruddy little line from skating Queen's campus in Kingston today.

Thanks to my family for an awesome birthday!!

Skatepark tour/endless summer.

Burnin' the midnight lamp all summer long. I got a call from New Line Skateparks on Wednesday, quit the mine later that day and my bro and I drove down to Kingston on Thursday. Psyched to be on the road again and psyched to learn how to build proper skateparks. This is the park I'll be working on apparently for the next two weeks (It's right across the street from my Aunt's house) and then I think we might ship out to Alberta or Saskatchewan. The jobs are all by contract so it should kind of be reminiscent of my tree planting days without planting fuckin trees.

Beseler setup

I'll bet your darkroom doesn't have a beer fridge in it.

We didn't start the fire. It was always burning since the world's been turning.

After years of intense data collection and countless hours of experimentation I have discovered the meaning of natural life on this planet as represented in the above Venn diagram. Each region within the schematic represents an equally important finite aggregation that culminates in the centrally located intersection that I have labeled here as "Dick Jokes Zine". Haha

Double exposure fool!

Decided to try to expose doubly two old pictures tonight and it pretty much worked. Gotta work on exposure time and dodging during exposure but I'm happy with this for now!

Milner package!!

Usually when I hear that a friend is getting married my gut reaction is "that poor bastard". haha.  It's like the end of an era and time for that person to put his/her big boy/girl pants on and get a real job and go into debt and what have you. But when Ron Ron and TURD life advocate Danielle tied the knot they kept it real (see back cover) and put out a full length noise album.
On a recent skateboarding trip to The Big Stink, Ron Ron set me up with this John Milner You're So Boss care package.
Milner, I'm really psyched on you.
The album art, that depicts a dog and two peopleiods puking in the shape of a pentagram was drawn by Milner's own Matt Davey (far right). And the fact that Milner decided to press this offering on vinyl adds to the authenticity and stoke factor of the whole project.
At 8:48 long (yes, both sides), the album crams in 12 boisterous songs that my Mom might refer to as "nightmare music". My favourite tracks are the loud as fuck "Meat Shits" and the more sedated "Hope Void". And I was especially psyched to hear "Taquitos" on the B-side because from what I can gather, it's a song about one of my guilty 7/11 pleasures.
It's so great to throw this on the turntable and hear friends doing good things on vinyl. And after Ron gave me the shirt I wore it for like 5 days straight.
Milner plays shows pretty often in and around Toronto. Check their bloggy blog and check them out to support some local talent.

Ollie from flat...

... Just kidding, its a just a wallie. Cool shot that my buddy Prashant took last weekend in the city. If you were able to see the other side of the lens you would see something quite rare. Skateboarders and BMX dudes sessioning the same jersey barrier at the very same time. A phenomenon usually seen only in the confines of a skatepark. As Prashant put it "we're bridging the gap". Thanks for the snapper home boy.

LAME CARVE!!!!!

FINALLY, my issue of LAME CARVE 1.1 came in the post. With a sweet stamp, Van Gogh lookin' like he bout to chop that ear off. shhhhhhit.  Solid skate nerd zine from my good friend Ron Ron (Mr. CotĂȘ) with a couple of old ads and skate photos that really brought me back. Remember that time Tom Penny (pretty much) made a comeback in the mid 2000's? Well its in there. Heath Kirchart kf bs lipping rails really really well before anyone else? Thats in there too. AVE, Kalis and a surprise appearance from Karl Watson(psyched) all grace the pages of 1.1. If you ever wanna talk to anyone about obscure skate magazine ads or old (or new for that matter) skate parts, contact the maker of this zine.
Pages 14+15 labelled "confusing art"can go any way you like. I see a Batman mask in a landfill. What do you figure? Maybe a huge tidal wave due to climate change ripping through a coastal town? Maybe?
Psyched on the first issue and I'm told by Ron (ref: white belly shaking video) that issue 2 is in the works and I can't wait to get that in the mail too. Also, beside myself with excitement to skateboard with Mr CotĂȘ net weekend. Soul Carve. Lame Carve.
PS watch the video of Ron with the volume turned up, its a lot more satisfying.
